FAQ
What is clinical research?

A clinical research (also called clinical study or clinical trials) is a research study in human volunteers to answer specific health questions. Carefully conducted clinical trials are the fastest and safest way to find treatments that work in people and ways to improve health. Interventional trials determine whether experimental treatments or new ways of using known therapies are safe and effective under controlled environments. Observational trials address health issues in large groups of people or populations in natural settings.

Why Volunteer?

Volunteers in Clinical Research are heros.  They help others and themselves by volunteering to participate in these trials.  Without their contributions new medications and procedures could never be approved.  By volunteering to participate in a clinical research trial you are helping not just oneself but the future generations.  Volunteers may experience the benefits of medications before they became available to the general public.

What are the benefits and risks of participating in clinical research?

Clinical research trials are constructed and carried out in order for those who participate to:
•    Play an active role in your health care.
•    Gain access to new research treatments and medications before they are available to the general public.
•    Help others by contributing to medical research.
Some of the risks regarding clinical research include:
•    Unpleasant, serious, or even life-threatening side effects to procedures and medications.
•    Participants may be unaffected by the medication or procedure.
•    The trial may call for more time than a non-trial treatment would; this may consist of more treatment, hospital time, or complex dosage requirements

Can a volunteer leave a clinical trial after it has begun?

Yes. A volunteer can leave a clinical trial, at any time.  If a volunteer chooses to withdraw from a trial, the volunteer should let the research team know about it, along with a reason for leaving.

Who sponsors clinical research trials?

Clinical research trials are sponsored by various medical organizations including physicians, medical institutions, foundations, pharmaceutical companies.  Furthermore, federal agencies including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Defense (DOD), and the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) participate in clinical research trials.
